Well, it seems like Smilin’ Bob won’t be smiling much now.  Smilin’ Bob, real name Steve Warshak, has been convicted on 93 counts of conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering.

From the AP:

Berkeley distributes various products alleged to boost energy, manage weight, reduce memory loss and aid sleep. The company’s main product, Enzyte, which promises sexual enhancement, has ads featuring “Smiling Bob,” a happy man with an exaggerated smile.

“This is a case about greed,” Spiegel said as he reviewed the case. “Steven Warshak preyed on perceived sexual inadequacies of customers.”

Betcha he won’t be smiling as much when he steps into the prison shower….

McCain Calling Obama The Antichrist?

Ok, if you haven’t seen the ad released by the McCain camp about Obama being “The One” then you must not be paying attention.  Seems like a lot of people are getting their thongs in a wad over the commercial poking fun at how Obama is being implicitly touted as the second coming.  I think the commercial is hilarious and pretty accurate of how the media is portraying Obama as the Messiah and savior.  Do I think Obama is the Antichrist?  No.  Does McCain think Obama is the Antichrist?  I seriously doubt it.

People need to develop a sense of humor.  Laugh a little!

iPhone’s Most Useless App…only $1000!

From the LA Times:

“Apple couldn’t pull it down before curious aristocrats — eight of them — had purchased it. Six people from the United States, one from Germany and one from France dropped a grand for the gem in the first 24 hours it was available, Heinrich said. That’s $5,600 in revenue for Heinrich and $2,400 for Apple, which collects 30% of each sale for ’store upkeep.’”

I wonder if the people who purchased this app are the same ones who take their picture with wads of cash and put it on their Myspace page…..

Civic Responsibility

“Why should I be involved?  Why should I vote?  Why should I even care?  I’m not a ‘political’ person.”

I have heard this statement over and over and over again.  This may sound corny, but as Uncle Ben said: “With great power comes great responsibility.”  The citizens of America hold great power and we lend it to our elected representatives.  Our representatives are called representatives for a reason.  They represent us: the American People.  The only way we can be properly represented in our Republic is to communicate our feelings to them through phone calls, letters, emails, visits to town hall meetings, and the like.  It is our civic responsibility to participate in the political process.  It may seem dull, mundane, and boring, but it is vital to maintaining our freedom.  Ever heard of the phrase “freedom isn’t free”?  It is used in the context of the military and we are truly grateful of their sacrifice, but I believe that civic responsibility factors into this phrase as well.  It takes time to gather information about what is happening in the federal, state, and local governments, but I believe it is vital to be informed beyond the 30 second soundbites heard on the evening news.

Our culture has changed.  The amount of information available about different issues has increased dramatically with the advent of the Internet, but unfortunately, our attention span as atrophied greatly.  We no longer desire to read lengthy books, research information, and other enlightening, yet “time-consuming”, activities.  Now we expect everything to be packaged in flashy graphics and constant action.  This is only frosting.  Frosting is good; frosting is tasty, but it is unhealthy to live on frosting alone.  Our mind craves “meat and potatoes”-type of reading, but we do not feed and expand our mind with substantive information that requires us to think.

This is what politicians look for.  They prey upon our lack of knowledge in economics, history, and critical thinking.  It is unfortunate that we care what is happening on the latest, greatest show on TV rather than the policies the 2 presumptive nominees are proposing.  TV is a good escape, but it is not reality; it will not affect your life.  What happens on the federal, state, and local-levels of government will affect your life tremendously.  Tax increases on the “evil” rich and “evil” corporations will affect you more than you may realize.  We currently have “representatives” who are proposing taking property that many people have earned by using their God-given talents and amassed wealth.  We proclaim “life, liberty, and property”, but yet we frown upon those who are talented and have the knack to become wealthy.  Corporations, believe it or not, are not really individuals.  They may be seen as a single entity in the eyes of the law, but they are really vessels to gain wealth for their stakeholders.  If we raise taxes on corporations, they will pass that cost on to the consumer in the form of increased prices.  Not only will you see an increase in prices, but how will that company be able to create new jobs if they’re paying money to the government?  That money could be used to create another entry-level position giving a recent graduate a starting point for a career in the company.

Do you see my point?  If you listen to the 30 second soundbite of the legislator who advocates the increase in taxes, you may think to yourself “Hmm….taking from the rich to give to the poor.  That sounds like a great idea!”, but if you think critically about the ramifications of such a policy, you can see that there might be a greater cost than the perceived benefit.  One last thing about taxes, isn’t it better to teach a man to fish (creating an entry-level position in a company to build a career upon) than to give a fish to him (taking money from the companies to expand welfare and other social spending)?

We must hold our representatives accountable.  The only way we can do that is by being active in the “political” process.  Write your county commissioner(s), your school board members, your state legislators, your governor, your US Congressman, your US Senators, and even the President!  Know where they stand on issues that are important to you.  Express your feelings about what you want to see done to them.  Granted, they are busy and you may receive a form letter back from them thanking you for sending your concerns to them, but their staff will definitely inform them about your thoughts.  If there is a town hall meeting with a state legislator or other representative, go down, listen, and try to speak with them.  They will certainly appreciate your thoughts and may even tell you what is going on in their respective office.

Finally, read up on the US Constitution and our Founding Fathers.  Most Americans probably don’t realize that the federal government is way too large and is in violation of the Constitution (see the 10th Amendment).  It is vital to our liberty for all Americans to understand the Constitution, the limits placed on the federal government, and understand why the Founding Fathers made it that way.  An interesting anecdote comes to mind when speaking about our Constitution.  After the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia adjourned, a lady asked Benjamin Franklin, “well Doctor, what have we got–a republic or a monarchy?” Franklin replied, “a republic, if you can keep it.”  The only way to keep our Republic is to be an informed citizen.  I’ll be honest, I don’t believe voting is a right (find the right to vote explicitly stipulated in the Constitution).  It is a privilege, an honor, and a duty.  It is something that should be taken very seriously and not light-heartedly.  Take the time to research the issues and where candidates stand on those issues.  DVR is becoming even cheaper, you can record your favorite shows and watch them later after you conclude your research.  After you finish your research, be sure to critically think about what the candidate says about those issues.  Has he wavered on those issues?  Is he taking this stance on a specific issue because it’s politically popular at that time and will get him elected?

One final quote I would like to leave with you.  It comes from William F. Buckley, Jr.: “The best defense against usurpatory government is an assertive citizenry.”  The best way we can preserve our personal liberty is to communicate with our representatives through letters or phone calls and at the ballot box.

The responsibility is yours.

Oh, sorry Maxine. We were looking for “nationalism”.

On Sunday Sales: Consistancy Matters!

Georgia has been debating about whether or not the state should lift the state-wide ban on packaged alcohol sales on Sunday and allow the people of Georgia to determine whether or not they will allow said sales on Sunday.  To me, this is more of an issue of pushing the power down to the people and consistency rather than a religious issue.

Currently, there is only a ban on “off-premises” sales of alcohol (i.e. you can’t go to the local store and pick up a 6-pack of beer), but you can go down to the bar and get a beer while watching the Sunday afternoon Braves game.  Ok, so you can go drive down to the bar, drink alcohol, and then drive back to your home after consuming alcohol rather than being allowed to pick up a 6-pack from the local store and enjoying it in the privacy of your own home?  Does anyone see a problem with this?

At the least, there is a seeming issue of safety.  Are our leaders saying that it is safer to consume alcohol in a bar and drive back home rather than allowing a man to buy alcohol from a store to drink in his own home?  Where is the logic in that?  Consistency is the key on this issue.  If you’re going to say that there are ramifications to the sale of alcohol on Sundays, then ban all alcohol sales on Sunday.  This would show that at least our leaders aren’t speaking out of both sides of their mouth.

As a Republican, I believe in pushing the power as far down as it can go.  Why doesn’t the our Republican legislature and Governor allow people of Georgia to make up their own minds?  I believe the best thing to do is practice what we preach.  If we, as Republicans, preach in the value of the individual and individual liberties, then we need to allow individuals to have the power to choose for themselves.

The Republican leaders in Georgia need to let the people decide!

Message to the Georgia House Republican Caucus: Dump Richardson!!!

This past legislative session is probably one of the most embarrassing for the state of Georgia.  The Govenor, Lt. Govenor, and Speaker of the House promised tax cuts for Georgians with grand plans to return money to the taxpayers.  Fast forward to the end of the 2008 session and we have nothing.  Speaker Richardson had his “GREAT” tax plan that would remove the state property tax burden and distribute the tax burden on about 175 services in the state.

The plan was a failure.  Richardson couldn’t get most people from his own party to support his tax plan.  The House proposed an ad valorum tax removal while the Senate proposed an income tax cut.  Neither chamber could come to an agreement on tax relief, so it pretty much died for this session.  I find it amazing that a Republican-controlled Senate, House, and Governorship would rather allow political in-fighting to take precident over the interests of the citizens of Georgia.  Not all the blame can or should be laid before the feet of the Speaker.  However, I do believe that the Speaker is a liability more than an asset.

I believe that the Speaker’s biggest blunder was the fall-out after the DOT board elections.  I believe that the Speaker showed himself to be a control freak who wanted to put his own croynies in power rather than working to move Georgia forward.  He has made quite a few enemies in his own party and I would be willing to bet that most Georgians are not thrilled with him.  The best advice I would give to the Republican Caucus in the State House would be to not re-elect him as Speaker and choose a competent leader who is willing to work for the benefit of the citizens of Georgia.

The Huckster Strives for “Brokered Convention”

 de Peach Pundit/1200 WOAI:

I have to admit, I am a Huckabee fan.  Although I didn’t vote for him in the primary, I support his fight for the FairTax.  I tend to be an optimist, but I’m not one to say “oh, it’s such a sunny day!” when it’s stormy outside.  Huckabee’s days are essentially numbered….and he knows that.  His new strategy is now one of aiming for a brokered convention.  He believes that he will be the eventual nominee because he is the “true conservative”.

Well, someone over at Peach Pundit believes that Huckabee could declare himself as a third party nominee.  If this were to happen, we would see either Hillary or Obama in the White House *shutters* because the GOP vote would probably be fractured since most hard-line conservatives would probably vote for Huckabee as a third party candidate rather than vote for McCain as the GOP nominee.  I yield that there are some issues that I disagree with McCain on, but I disagree with both Democratic nominees more on fundamental issues of defense and domestic policy (i.e., socialized health care).  I am willing to put my differences aside and elect McCain to the White House in November 2008 because I believe that the first 100 days of a Democrat’s administration would be more damaging than what McCain might do.

My only hope is that my conservative friends will take heed and take a closer look at McCain.  He is a fiscal conservative.  He would cut taxes and cut government spending as well!  Isn’t this the president that conservatives have wanted since the days of Reagan?  Talk is cheap, my conservative friends.  It’s easy to say “I won’t vote for McCain because he’s a RINO” based off a few pieces of legislation and ignore his other stances.  Granted, I hate McCain-Feingold and think it’s a horrid transgression upon the first amendment, but hopefully the Supreme Court will continue to examine it and determine its constitutionality.  Bill Bennett wrote an article about McCain.  I encourage you to read it and then take a second look at McCain and the alternative.

Huckabee running as a third party would be detrimental to the Republican Party and the United States.
